  1. Hi All, I have a PM610, and it was doing a great job for the last years. I really love this model. Last week it didn't want to start. I figured out based on manual that it maybe the starter that has a problem with the recoil.

McCulloch Mac 3200 Chainsaw-Not getting gas through carb. Can squirt bulb and will run until that gas is burned (seconds). Have installed kit in carb, new lines, cleaned carb, new gas filter.

While doing the following troubleshooting steps, it is best to practice caution. The chainsaw might start suddenly while you’re checking it. Hold it as if you expect it to start any moment.

Is there a spark?

Check is if there is a spark. The spark plug ignites the air-fuel mixture and initiates combustion. Remove the spark plug, connect it to a plug wire, and let it touch the metal part of the saw. Watch the electrode on the plug and see if there is a spark. Wear and tear will cause the spark plug to corrode. If there is no spark, brush the spark plug lightly with a steel brush to clean it. If cleaning it doesn’t solve the issue, replace the spark plugs with new ones. If you’ve replaced it with new ones, you may need to replace the ignition coil.

Is there fuel in the tank?

If you haven’t used your chainsaw for a while, the fuel may have gotten bad. After 8 weeks, the volatile components of the fuel would have evaporated – and it won’t ignite. Drain your tank and put in fresh fuel.

Is the fuel mixture correct?

Two stroke engines like the one on your chainsaw require a mixture of gasoline and oil. For almost all engines of this type, a 50-1 mixture is recommended. That’s 2 1/2 ounces of oil for every gallon of gas. Make sure you are using two-cycle oil. To make sure the mixture is correct, drain the oil from your engine. Mix the gas and oil in a fuel can and shake it well. Put the fresh fuel in your gas tank.

Engine may be flooded

When you try to start your chainsaw and you smell fuel, your engine may be flooded. Remove the spark plug and check for moisture. If you see moisture there is too much fuel on the engine. Drain the fuel through the spark plug hole and put in a fresh spark plug.

Is the air filter dirty?

Check the air filters on your chainsaw. Most starting issues are caused by dirty air filters. If it is clogged, it will draw too much gas in comparison to the amount of air – as if the choke is always on – or it will block the flow of fuel. Clean the air filter regularly.

If you have electric chainsaw – check If the switch in the ON position?

This may sound like a stupid question but it should be the first thing you should check. Your chainsaw should be switched on and the switch should be staying in the ON position. If there is no continuity, replace the switch.

If you’ve checked all of the above and your chainsaw still won’t start, there might be a problem with the Carburetor. Unless you’re an experienced mechanic, it might be best to just bring it to a service center, especially if it’s still under warranty.

Start by checking the basics such as Fuel, Switches and Spark Plugs and making adjustments. It can be as simple a solution as that. If that doesn’t resolve the problem, the issue may lie with the carburetor – which may require a visit to the repair shop.

Here are the basic issues and troubleshooting steps:

There might not be enough Gas – If you haven’t used it for quite some time, the gas may have evaporated. Make sure the gas tank is at least half full.

The gas might be old – If unused for a long time, the volatile components of the gas will evaporate and it will not ignite. If you are not sure about the age of the fuel, empty the gas tank and refill with new gas. Fuel is only good for 8 weeks from the day you purchased it.

Fuel Line and Fuel Filter might be blocked or damaged – If the Fuel Line and Fuel Filter is damaged, split or blocked, the chainsaw will not get enough fuel. Dip the filter in gas and see if it will freely run through the other side. If it doesn’t, replace it.

Diaphragm might be sticky from old gas – The diaphragm goes bad over time. If you find that it’s sticky, buy a rebuild kit or replace it.

Spark Plug might be old – If the spark plugs are dirty or corroded, clean it with a steel brush or replace it altogether.

Idle ports may be plugged or blocked – This is the small ports in the carburetor where the fuel passes through when in idle. Give it a good cleaning to remove any clogging or blockage.

Clogged Air Filter – Put the air filter up against a bright light and check if there are dark areas deep in the filter. Clean the filter or buy a new one.
Vent in the Fuel Cap is plugged – If the vents in the fuel caps are clogged the fuel becomes vacuum locked. Check the cap and clean it or replace.

High-Low adjustments screws may need calibrating – If you have these screws in your chainsaw, adjust them by turning both screws clockwise until you reach the end – gently. Do not force or damage! Bring the saw to full throttle. Starting with the High Speed screw, turn it up counter clockwise until the chainsaw starts sounding rough and bucking. You can determine this from the vibration. Remember the position. Turn the screw clockwise until the chainsaw misbehaves again. Adjust the screw halfway between these two positions. For the Low Speed screw, repeat the procedure in idle.

If you’ve checked all the possible problems and corrected them and your chainsaw still won’t stay running – it might be time to bring it to the service center for a carburetor check-up.
